Prompt: Write about something that you believed as a child.

Prompt Response: Something I believed as a child was the tooth fairy. I remember when I was at my grandma's house, I lost a tooth. I was so excited to get money from the tooth fairy. I had put my tooth under my pillow before I went to bed. When I woke up the next morning, I was expecting money. To my surprise when I lifted up my pillow, there was nothing there. I hadn't lost hope though. The days that followed, I put my tooth under my pillow. Waking up each morning disappointed but still hopeful. Though, I eventually gave up after seven days. 

Summary: In class we identified logos, pathos, and ethos in the media and completed vocabulary lesson two image assignment. 

Reflection: I learned that antipathy means an intense dislike.

Prompt Response:   A time I felt connected to nature is when I was walking on a park trail and I noticed a cherry blossom tree off to the side of the trail. It captured my attention so suddenly. I stopped to look at it. I admired the beauty of the flowers. They were so pink and delicate. For ten minutes I stared at them. I ended up taking a photo of the cherry blossoms right after. I framed the photo and it currently sits on my nightstand. Through the appreciation of the beauty of the cherry blossoms, I made a connection with the flowers.  Summary:  In class we took notes on Native Americans and the history of their literature.  Reflection:  I learned about the details of an origin myth.

Prompt: After watching the short film Identity, write a blog post reflecting on how the masks in the film represent the pressure to fit in and the struggle to discover who you really are. Choose one moment from the film that stood out to you and explain why. Then, connect the film’s message to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” and to the mask you are creating in class. What part of your identity do you want your mask to reveal?

Prompt Response: The masks in the short film Identity represent everyone's need to fit into the norm and stay inside a box. The masks show a lack of self identity and are used as a shield to hide our true selves from judgment by others. One moment from the film that stood out was at the end when the girl walks out in front of her peers without a mask whilst they stare at her. This stood out to me because when the girl embraced her individuality and did not follow the crowd, she was looked at differently. It just shows how breaking out of the norm is so uncommon. The film's message of not being fearful of judgment and embracing individuality connects back to Langston Hughes’ poem “I, Too” by both pieces showing an individual embracing their own and being proud of who they are. The mask I am creating in class also shares the message with these two pieces of media, the parts of my identity I am most proud of will be showcased on the mask. Prompt: Thinking about "The Rockpile," what is something your parents forbade you from doing when you were growing up? Explain what it was and why they might have set that rule.

Prompt Response: Something my parents forbade me from doing when I was growing up was going outside past 6 PM. We would be able to have time to play outside with friends after school. Then after 6 PM, we had to stay inside. They might have set that rule because of our safety. There are many dangerous people and things young kids can run into. It is better to keep us away from that.  Summary: In class we read "The Rockpile" by James Baldwin. Reflection: I learned that "raise cane" means to cause trouble.
